What a trip!

Since I arrived home on Wednesday I have been so tired I have not been inclined to make anything so I don't have any of my own art to show you so I thought I'd give you a mini travelog.

Before I went to Mexico I wasn't sure what I was going to like most. Was it going to be the gob smacking archaeological sites...........above and below is TIKAL (in Guatemala)

This is PALENQUE.......

and this is Teotihuacan just outside of Mexico City

or the plant and animal life.............Coatimundi at Tikal.....

fabulous cactus as big as trees.........

and gorgeous flowering trees............or the art

fun skeleton stuff outside a shop in Oaxaca.......I loved this!!....

Aztec calendar (apparently it's not a calendar at all) in the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City

Diego Rivera murals in the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City............all these things were above and beyond my expectations.

What I didn't like was:

13 hour flight from Guatemala to Madrid
6 hours in a queue to be told there was nothing the airline would do to help
26 hours on a coach from Madrid to Calais
ferry crossing to Dover
more coach to Gatwick
train into London
train home!!!!!!
I finally arrived back late on Wednesday afternoon instead of on Sunday. However I count myself lucky compared to a lot of other people who were trying to get home at the same time. I have to say a big thank you to the company we travelled with EXPLORE who were fantastic in organising the coach and ferry crossing for us and getting us home safely.

MEXICO HERE I COME!!

I had planned on a journal page to blog today but an emergency call from my husband for more paperwork for our Kazakhstan move while I was in the changing rooms of Marks and Spencers put paid for that! After four hours of trying to sort things out I was losing the will to live never mind create and blog!!!

So, I am off to Mexico tomorrow for two weeks of R&R, I can't wait to get on that plane! Watch this space after April 19th for pics of my adventures!!

Take care till then!!

ZENTANGLE OR POSH DOODLING!

Today saw three friends Sarah, Helen and Chris arrive for a play/get together day. We were sitting quite happily chatting and drinking coffee when I got an emergency call from my Dad which meant I had to abandon them in my house with quick instructions as to where coffee etc was! About an hour later I came back having done my good deed for the day to find them happily ZENTANGLING at my table! Needless to say I quickly joined in and we had several more hours of fun.

These are my results which I have to say I am really pleased with having not done this before!

Below is my final piece which I don't think really counts as zentangle, more traditional doodling but I really like this one!

BIRD STAMPS

As things continue to be hectic here in the run up to my move I find I have less and less time to create and to play and I really miss it!
A couple of evenings ago I decided I needed a play fix so I got out a box of saved postage stamps and sat and went through them and pulled out all the bird themed ones I could find.
Then I created a painty/inky background on a journal page, let it dry and then glued the bird stamps to it in a rough square.

Next came a layer of gesso that was sort of dried with a heat gun, then rubbed over with a couple Distress ink colours, again roughly dried and then more gesso and again sort of dried. Next I took a baby wipe and rubbed off some/most of the gesso to reveal the birds to a greater or lesser extent. Some rubbed away more than others but that was OK, I like a distressed finish!
A bit of outlining, some words from an old book added, extra colour stencilled through sequin waste and I am really pleased with the result.
Hope you like it too!

TREES

Have not had anything to blog for the last several days, my work room is a disaster zone at the moment as I try to sort it out ready for leaving for Kazakhstan and it's not very inspiring! I walk in, look at the mess and walk out again!
However yesterday I decided that I had to do something, was getting withdrawal symptoms, so hauled some stuff out into the kitchen and the above journal pages are the result. They are actually a double page spread and sit side by side but were too big for the scanner!
Funnily they are NOTHING like I set out to do! Might play with my original idea later today.

JABBERWOCKY AND THE WHITE RABBIT

ALICE is everywhere just now, no big surprise there!!
SUNDAY STAMPER run over on HELS SHERIDANS blog had the white rabbit (or Alice) as the theme this weekend so I decided to make this little collage using some old and some new stamps.
The Jabberwocky J stamp is from STAMPERS ANONYMOUS the Mad Hatter is from TJ DESIGNS and the rabbit (though I think it's a hare really) is from A CAPELLA

DINA WAKELY WORKSHOPS

These two pieces are meant to be side by side as they are a double spread in quite a big journal (wouldn't fit under the scanner!) but blogger in its wisdom seperated them and put them one under the other....gggrrr!! why does it do that????

Ok moan over..........got back yesterday from two days of workshops with
DINA WAKELY. Dina was teaching at ART FROM THE HEART studio which is in HARROGATE .....home of BETTYS TEA ROOMS.....can't go to Harrogate and not go to Bettys..so we did.......Ok, getting side tracked!.......AFTH run by DYAN REAVELEY

These are some of the pieces that I made in the two days.........of course I am only showing you the ones I am pleased with so far, some of these still need some more work but there are several that need lots more work on them! But that's OK, that's what a workshop is all about!

MARCH CALENDAR PAGE

Here is my MARCH CALENDAR PAGE, my unofficial entry for the 365 calendar challenge being run by Kate over on THE KATHERINE WHEEL.
I have managed to keep up so far but I am thinking that from now on, as the move gets closer, that I will fall behind but I'm not going to worry about it, I can always play catch up later!

I make no apology for using the ALICE and MAD HATTER images again on this, have to make the most of it when fav things are around! I did want to use tickets for the days on this page but could not get 31 of them to fit on the page after I had drawn the border! Oh well, save them for another month.

KARIN PRETENDS TO BE ALICE!

KARIN PRETENDS TO BE ALICE!
As STAMPOTIQUE has new images out just now I have been playing more than usual with them! The card above has KARIN #6108 and KITTY #6096 which are both new images and ROW of FACES #6020 which is an older image. While I was posting the ALICE IN WONDERLAND piece yesterday I had a very silly thought that one of the Stampotique girls might like to pretend to be Alice........so here she is with her best cheesy grin and her very own CHESHIRE CAT!!
This piece is also on the new STAMPOTIQUE DESIGNERS BLOG.

This is my piece of inspiration for the STAMPOTIQUE DESIGNERS CHALLENGE where the challenge is to use Stampotique stamps and the colours rose, pale yellow and mossy green with blue as an optional colour.
I stamped the ROW HOUSES #9082 onto paint colour strips and cut and pieced them, the tree was made using CRAYON CIRCLES #8948 and the little bods are called TWO STICKS #6006.
And don't forget that STAMPOTIQUE stamps are available in the UK from THE STAMP ATTIC

ALICE IN WONDERLAND

WEDNESDAY STAMPER has ALICE IN WONDERLAND as its theme this week. I expect that Alice is going to be a popular theme over the next couple of weeks as the release of the new film gets closer. I have loved ALICE IN WONDERLAND for as long as I can remember so I am more than happy if that happens!
I made this journal page a couple of weeks ago so it is nice to be able to share it today. The images are from a set of postcards that a friend gave to me, as are the words around the edges.

I WILL MISS

my play days with Helen and Sarah when I leave!
Yesterday we decided to have a journal day and took our inspiration from the DIANA TROUT book Journal Spilling. If you head over to SARAHS blog.......THE ART OF MOODLING.....she has a YouTube video by Diana explaining what we did!

I ended up with three pages cos we had to let paint dry in between processes.......makes it look like I was mega productive!!

I even wrote on these pages, unheard of for me though because these had no focal image the writing sort of filled them in.
All in all a very interesting exercise!

MR JEREMY FISHER

Last Saturday I went to Sarahs.....THE ART OF MOODLING......metal book workshop at PADDYS STAMPING PLACE. I had a fab day of just playing around with metal working tools and inks and paints.

This is the front of my book.........we had small Beatrix Potter books to cover.........I had Jeremy Fisher but ended up with an owl on the front!

This is the back, I made a mistake with the lettering and ended up with a gap between the first T and the W, oh well!!
I really liked the cogs and wheels effect.........this was done by placing Tims cogs and sprockets under the metal and rubbing over to get the impression.

This is inside the front cover of my book, I coloured it with a little black paint, again a happy accident as some paint oozed over from the front so I just spread it around! I then added stamped cogs......by HOME IMPRESSIONS....to carry on the theme from the covers.

I have decided that I am going to go with the Jeremy Fishery-ness of the book and enhance the pages! So here I've added some trailing leaves, a little damp house and some buttercups!

THE TIME HAS COME........

TO MAKE MY BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

I AM MOVING TO KAZAKHSTAN!!

Well, not just me, my husband as well.........he is the reason we are moving, he has a new job there. It has taken quite a while for all the details to be ironed out which is why I haven't said anything about it out here in blogland but now all the arrangements are finally coming together the time has come to share the news!
I know most of you are going to react with WHERE???? So, Kazakhstan is the 9th biggest country in the world, a former Soviet state, original home of the tulip and the apple, apparently, and an exciting place.....well for me it is!
We are going to be living in Almaty, the former capital, which is right over in the east of the country very close to the Chinese border. The picture above is of the Orthodox Russian cathedral in Almaty.
Stuart should be going in about 4 weeks time and I will follow a few weeks after that, the end of April should see us both there and settling into a new life.
This blog will be carrying on and I will no doubt be posting pics of our new surroundings!!

INSPIRED BY

Yesterday two friends.....Sarah of THE ART OF MOODLING fame and Helen came over for a play day. We decided to take the art of KELLY RAE ROBERTS as shown in her book TAKING FLIGHT as our inspiration and starting point. It was great fun seeing how we all tackled the ideas so differently..........keep an eye on Sarahs blog for pics of all the projects, she was far more organised than me and took pics as we went along and of the end results.

This is my piece which I am quite pleased with apart from the fact the body could have done with a bit more definition! I am hopeless at drawing faces so I cheated and used one cut from an Alice in Wonderland post card!

MY LIFE IS DIFFERENT

Just thought I would share this journal page. It has been sitting around for a while with just the border and the little bods on while I pondered on what to write on it, then I read JENNY DOHS BLOG where she talks about her "life being different these days" as she moves into her new venture. Those words struck such a chord with me I knew I had found what to write!
I am not much of a writer of my feelings in my journal, I prefer to add a quote that has taken my eye or just a few significant words but every now and then I feel the need to write things down and this was one of those times!
