If you read the written word

then more than likely you'll need a bookmark!

This week the theme on THREE MUSES is THE WRITTEN WORD
After some thought I decided to make a bookmark! I have a bit of a "thing" for bookmarks! I have dozens of them collected on my travels.....they make cheap and useful souvenirs.

I had a hard time getting a decent picture of the complete bookmark.......so it's shown in bits!

It is made from the spines of two old books stitched together! This is the back.

Skulls with words within them stamped onto paper......as I stitched around the edge of the bookmark I also stitched around the skulls
I made a tassel for the bottom......not a very good one but serves the purpose!
Stitched skull charms and beads around the tassel

What a cool idea to use old book spines! I also have about 30-50 bookmarks, always reading about 6 books at a time (one too heavy to take out from home, one too difficult to read at my bus trip to work, one poetry book that isn´t appropriate all the time, one book to really dive in, etc.) ... I never go anywhere without a book.

Brilliant bookmark & I loves your dangly bit! Great idea to use old book spines..have you any plans for the covers? I saw a great idea where you can make a storage tub/pot using a cover..no glue or stitching involved. Keep thinking I'll have a go.. I pick up old books for altering & then get attached to them!!

A creative and macabre bookmark! As for the Kindle - phooey! I want a book I can touch, smell, and turn the pages...one that doesn't have to be recharged!! I, too, love bookmarks, but I would never have thought using old book spines. Good idea. Thanks for sharing!

Is this what happens to us when we become so absorbed in books that we forget to eat and perish along the way? A little bit macabre, a little bit scary, funny, inventive and a great bookmark. I love it.
